Youth Academy: U8-U12
The Westchester Flames Youth Academy provides a player-centered development environment for boys in the U8 through U12 age groups. During these foundational years, our focus is on building technically gifted, confident, and intelligent soccer players who develop a lifelong passion for the game.
Rather than emphasizing results, league standings, or winning at all costs, our curriculum is designed to maximize individual player development. Every training session is built around creating thousands of quality touches on the ball while helping players improve their decision-making, creativity, and understanding of the game.
Training Philosophy
The U8–U12 years represent the most important stage of a player's technical development. At this age, players are naturally curious, eager to learn, and capable of making tremendous improvements through consistent, purposeful training.
Our sessions emphasize:
- Mastery of the ball through dribbling, receiving, turning, and ball manipulation.
- Passing and receiving with proper technique under increasing levels of pressure.
- 1v1 attacking and defending to build confidence and creativity.
- Developing speed of play through quick decision-making.
- Small-sided games that maximize touches, involvement, and problem-solving.
- Age-appropriate tactical concepts including spacing, support, transition, and positional awareness.
- Building confidence to play out of pressure rather than simply kicking the ball away.
Players are encouraged to take risks, solve problems independently, and learn from mistakes in a positive learning environment. This approach develops confident players who are comfortable in possession and capable of making intelligent decisions throughout the game.
Small-Sided Competition
The Youth Academy follows the U.S. Soccer player development model by using age-appropriate game formats that maximize player involvement and accelerate development.
U8–U10: 7v7 Soccer
Players in the U8 through U10 age groups compete in the 7v7 format.
Playing 7v7 allows each player significantly more touches on the ball, more opportunities to attack and defend, and increased involvement in every phase of the game. With fewer players on the field, individuals have more chances to make decisions, develop technical skills, and gain confidence in game situations.
The smaller field size also encourages combination play, creativity, and learning proper positioning without overwhelming young players with the complexities of the full-sized game.
U11–U12: 9v9 Soccer
Beginning at U11, players transition to the 9v9 format as the next step in their development.
The move to 9v9 introduces additional tactical concepts while still providing frequent opportunities to touch the ball and participate in the game. Players begin to better understand team shape, positional responsibilities, building out of the back, attacking combinations, defensive organization, and transition moments.
The larger field and additional teammates create more realistic game situations while maintaining an environment where every player continues to be actively involved.
Preparing for the Future
The U8–U12 Academy serves as the bridge between introductory soccer and the full 11v11 game played beginning at U13. By focusing on technical excellence, tactical understanding, confidence on the ball, and a love for the game, Westchester Flames prepares players for success at the next level while ensuring they enjoy every step of their soccer journey.
Our goal is to develop complete players—technically sound, tactically aware, physically capable, and mentally confident—who are prepared to thrive as they progress through the Flames pathway.
